We went with a group of friends and did the rice table prix fixe menu. The food was overall good but I am not sure it was worth the value ($89 pp). The appetizers were amazing and definitely the stars of the meal- we loved the panipuri, chicken satay, siu mai in particular. The roti canai was delicious. I think the rest of the courses kind of blended together and there were no stars among the main dishes. They bring them all out at the same time and maybe it was too many things at once but they all tasted a little too similar. I think the beef rendang was the best of the bunch because the beef was really nicely cooked but it was just a little disappointing after such nice appetizer courses. The drinks were delicious and ambiance and service was good. I just am not sure it was worth over $250 a couple for this meal with 1 drink each and tips. In hindsight, I'd probably order a few things a la carte and share them in the future. But still an overall fun experience!
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience dining here. I highly recommend trying their Rice Table tasting menu that comes with ~14 different items to taste for ~$90 per person. All items on the rice table menu were delicious & full of flavor. While the tasting menu doesn't have large portions, there was plenty to eat & be full from. We left full and satisfied along with a few bites of leftovers to take home. The benefit of the Rice Table is that you get to try a majority of their dishes that are on the regular full menu. The dishes were all well made & delicious. There really wasn't a dish I didn't enjoy trying. Some of the dishes I loved the most were: - roti canai (crispy, doughy, flaky, & savory) - blistered heirloom tomato curry (full of flavor!) - chicken satay (tender, flavorful chicken paired with a delicious peanut sauce) - Chinese sausage & shrimp siu-mai (a flavorful & plump dumpling) - zucchini & corn fritter (crispy on the outside & full of goodness on the inside - delicious with the sauce & provided sambal (house made condiment sauces)) In addition to the delicious food we had, the staff were friendly, personable, & took great care of us. The ambiance is enjoyable with fun, whimsical decor! I would love to come back. It's a great spot to go for a date night or bring friends & family for an enjoyable & unique dining experience.
The right level of heat and amazing flavor! My husband and I ordered plates to share (about 6) and left full and happy. Great service as well! We would have loved to try the Rijstafel but it was too expensive. Wish they had a smaller version.
The food here is insanely good! You'll want to slow down and savor every second of every bite. So many delicious flavors (and textures) artistically weaved together into a symphony for your senses. I had the Sumatran Style Beef Rendang, which was perfectly portioned. The sambal hijau, served on the side, added just a little sweet, smokey, tanginess that was really interesting. The egg was perfectly soft boiled and dusted with something I couldn't put my finger on, but so enjoyable. And the candied anchovies...yum!!! My partner had the Grilled Banana Leaf Black Cod. When I say that the fish was perfectly cooked, I mean it was PERFECTLY COOKED. So delicious and moist. The coconut chili broth it was bathed in was so good. I only wished this dish had been served with rice or roati to help cut through it's richness...and also give us an opportunity to soak up all that beautiful gravy. I can't decide which entree I enjoyed better. Both were A++ We also shared the Crispy Fried Fishballs as a starter. Perfectly tender and moist with a tiny bit of flavorful heat. 10/10 would recommend. The ambiance was cute and casual, but on the higher end of casual. My only complaint is that we were seated at a 2-top, which I personally dislike. Overall, we really loved the food, service, and ambiance and will definitely recommend to all our foodie friends! Great find!
Ever since I went to Amsterdam and ate at an Indonesian rice table I have been looking in the US for one to replicate my experience. The prefix menu was absolutely delicious! The portions may be small, but the amount of food is so filling! Definitely make a reservation a few weeks in advance when they open them up. We love the decor, especially for Halloween. The bathroom was a crazy experience filled with rainbows and unicorns. The staff were so friendly and did a great job at guiding you through the menu and culinary experience. The price is a little steep per person.
Did the Rice Table for $89 a person. To sum it up: there were a lot of flavors going on... too much! There was curry here, cardamon there, anchovy here, coconut there...so much going on! And it was confusing that they gave you 5 additional condiments on the side to enhance as needed. The individual dishes were already flavored fine. To me, standouts were the Beef Rendang, Herb Omelet, Zucchini & Corn Fritters, and that amazing Roti. Rice was needed to tame the strong flavors of all the dishes (which do arrive to the table at once). Dishes were good. I thought the charge was a little high for the quantity they give. It didn't seem like I was getting a $300 meal for a table of 3. We enjoyed it, but I felt there was too much going on.
Every dish was nicely composed and had great taste! The beef rendang was a bit salty for me, but nothing too bad. The papaya salad was great (might be spicy to some) although my dad did not enjoy the mango in it. he's a papaya salad purist I guess. The roti had a great texture and the chutney it came with was delicious. I forget the exact flavors of the dessert (it seems like the menu rotates, which I love!) but it was delicious, although a teeny bit oily/dense. A bouncier, more doughnut like texture wouldve been great.
Loved the ambiance, food, and service! This was my first time eating a more traditional Indonesian dinner and I'm so glad I did it here because everything was delicious. With the help of a friend from Singapore, she made sure we ordered the right mix of dishes to share. The entire meal shared between 3 people was perfect - about 6 dishes. On a Tuesday night at 7pm there wasn't a wait for a table so not to worry about reservations unless you're a quite large party. But coming from NYC we are used to filled tables every night of the week.
Once again, looking for a restaurant that offered outdoor seating so we could bring the Princess. We came across Gado Gado. Our experience with Indonesian food is limited to the few dishes offered by Fikscue BBQ in Alameda, CA. The prix fix Rice Table looked intriguing. Not inexpensive to be sure but what a way to experience a cuisine that you're not really familiar with! There are two outdoor seating areas. One at the front of the parking lot near the sidewalk. The other to the left side facing the restaurant. We wanted to sit near the restaurant because it looked like it would be free from the sun earlier than the other section. We were told we could sit there but we had to vacate the table by 6:30 for a reservation. It was 5:00 at the time and 1.5 hours seemed like it should be sufficient. Of course, our pace would be at the mercy of the kitchen, so everyone had to cooperate. The Rice Table is a meal that everyone at the table must participate in. Since there were only the two of us and the dog (she doesn't get to vote), it was an easy decision. One of the staff members brought out a bowl of water and a few shrimp chips to keep the Princess happy. I gave her the shrimp chips a bit at a time and the last piece just as we finished our meal. There are so many components to the Rice Table menu. Everything that is pictured below came with our meal. Some reviewers have said that the portions were tiny and some of the items were listed separately to make the menu seem more robust. Others said that they didn't feel that they got good value for the cost of the meal. Another thing to consider is how much work goes on in the kitchen to prepare this meal for just two diners. It would be much more time efficient with more diners. Our opinion is that the Rice Table is fairly priced, and the food quantity is sufficient. Yes, many of the appetizers are one or two bites, but there are several of them. I did question the names of some of the dishes because I couldn't taste some of the listed flavors. At the same time, there was nothing that I didn't like. An example is Oma's Clove Scented Coconut Rice. The description lists coconut, turmeric, pandan and fried shallot. Nowhere does it mention Clove other than in the name. Maybe the cloves were present when the rice was being cooked and then removed before being served. House PIckles - 5 - a great palate cleanser to prepare you taste buds for the flavors to come. Sambal - 3 - we're neutral on the four sauces that were to accompany whatever our hearts desired. Being novices, we wanted to taste the dishes as they came from the kitchen before adjusting the flavors. As it was, we enjoyed each dish so much that we didn't use the Sambal. Panipuri - 5 - the presentation was attractive and the flavor even better. Zucchini & Corn Fritter - 5 - Crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, flavor throughout! Running the fritter through the romesco was definitely a must. Chicken Satay - 4 - the chicken was moist and tender. The crispy rice added another dimension to the texture. Chinese Sausage & Shrimp Siu Mai - 5 - I was looking for Lop Cheung but didn't find any. That didn't make the Siu Mai any less desirable. Roti Canai - 5 - I'm a huge fan of Roti, especially Roti Telur, which has egg in. While I'm used to dipping my Roti into Yellow Curry. Gado Gado presents the Blistered Heirloom Tomato Curry as the dip. It is super yummy! I didn't even miss the yellow curry. Oma's Clove Scented Rice - 5 - nothing works better with saucy dishes as fluffy rice that has it's own flavor and is ready to absorb more. Blistered Heirloom Tomato Curry - 5 - perfectly seasoned and ready to add another dimension to the Roti Canai. Coconut Clam Curry - 5 - This is the dish that I finished the rice with. I love all three main components of this dish individually and combined just made them extra special. The clams were plump and cooked perfectly. Ayam Kecap - 5 - this has a be considered soul food in Indonesia. I can see this dish along with rice being all that's served for dinner. According to Wikipedia, this dish usually contains sweet soy sauce marinated chicken. I didn't miss the chicken. Wok Fired Herbal Omelet - 5 - My wife, who doesn't really care for eggs, loved this dish. Need I say more? Sumatran Style Beef Rendang - 5 - On appearance, this dish looked soooo dry. In actuality, it was very moist, tender and wonderful. Now I wish I had't finished the rice so soon. Orange Cardamom Apple Cider Donuts - 5 - Why have more desserts on offer when you already have the perfect one for most people? These Donut hole like morsels had an crunchy outer crust like an old fashion donut, soft fluffy cake inside and came with a Kaya Jam (coconut) dipping sauce. The only possible improvement might have been ice cream. I would have asked, but alas, we were out of time. Yes, yes, yes, we would dine here again. And maybe even get the Rice Table again because it was so good and filling!
